Sheila McDonough Obituary

Sheila McDonough (nee Gahan, Matis)

August 10, 1937 – September 4, 2020

Mom left this world Friday, September 4, 2020. Some would say bone marrow cancer was the culprit to her demise, but Mom made it clear it was just her time to go. She also made it clear throughout here final days not to ask her, “How are you doing?” She’d flinch and give you that look that cut right through you…yep, you know it, if you knew Mom!

Daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandma, GG, friend, animal lover, Irish, sassy, sloppy kisser, opinionated, intelligent, drinker, smoker, flirt, avid reader, and a crossword puzzle master.

Mom was born and spent most of her life in the Cleveland area. She married Dad, Bob Matis, in 1958. Together (as she was no Virgin Mary), they procreated four children, Sandi, Dianne, Greg, and Scott. It’s easy to see why most of her career was spent as a stay-at-home-mom. To keep her sanity, she would volunteer and became actively involved in the Girl Scouts running the Day Camp Program. Once her home team matured, she worked for Alexander Florist where she discovered her green thumb. Mom also discovered the joy of earned money in her pocket! She eventually moved onto Winkelman’s Department Store and was ultimately promoted to the district director’s assistant.

Mom married her second husband, Bill McDonough, in 1986. She became the stepmother to Trude and Megan. The whole family took a giant leap and moved down to Eastman, GA, in 1994 and became southern “transplants.” They loved small town living, and both her and Bill became active in the community, more specifically Relay for Life. After Bill passed away in 2006, Mom came back to Cleveland (after a lot of nudging).

Mom was preceded in death by her parents, John and Betty; husband, Bill; brother, Jack; sister, Pat; son, Greg; grand, Michelle; and her precious Clydie, Amos, Andy, and Comet. (Watch out Trumpsters! As a recovered Trump voter, Mom promised to work together with these loved ones to convince The Man to make it right.)

She is survived by her first husband, Bob; children, Sandi (Michael), Dianne, and Scott (Judy); step children, Trude (Michael) and Megan; “adopted” daughter, MaryAn; grands, Ashley, Liz, Jess, Elicia, Austin (Wenjing), Cory (Jillian), Aubrey, and Emma; GG’s Tiffany, Autumn, Belly, Samantha, Nathan, Lucas, Damion, Lydia, Belle, Collin, Dominic, Tyler, and Andrew; and her loving animals Riley and Billy.

Join us to pay your respects on Saturday, September 26, 2020, 11am – 1 pm, on the Around The Corner patio, 18616-20 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, 44107. Irish Coffee Bar, Teas, open bar, and pastries will be served. And, enjoy Bagpiper Michael Crawley at 11:30am.

A Mother’s Irish Blessing

May those who love us, love us.

And, those who don't love us, may God turn their hearts.

If He doesn't turn their hearts,

may he turn their ankles so we'll know them by their limping.
