Mary Kay McCoig (nee Nurnbirg). Beloved mother of Deborah A. (Rob) McCoig. Cherished sister of Dale T. Nurnbirg. Dearest companion of Otto L. Arendt. Former spouse of Sherman N. Gray and Dwayne E. McCoig (deceased). Mary was the first female lieutenant of the Street Guards and was subsequently promoted to the first female Captain of the Street Guards in the Cleveland Public School System at Verda Brobst Elementary School in 1969, where she was responsible for overseeing the male crossing guards. She opened this previously male only position to include females with school staff approval. She was the only seventh-grade First Soprano to earn a superior rating in the Cleveland All City School Contest in 1971. She spent 35 years in the protection of financial institutions, their assets and personnel at Central, Society and then Key Bank. In 1999, she became the first and only female Lieutenant in the Society/KeyBank Police Department. Her love of all animals was well-known. Viewing will be held at the David Martens & Son Funeral Home 4175 Rocky River Drive (between Lorain & Puritas) on Friday, Sept. 16th, from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from 2-6 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday 6:00 p.m. Donations can be made to the Cleveland Animal Protective League, 1729 Wiley Avenue Cleveland 44113 or the Poor Clares Monastery, 3501 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland 44111.
