Obituary

Andrew C. Putka Age 88. Passed away at home in Rocky River. Andrew was born on November 14, 1926 and passed away April 19, 2015. A lifelong Cleveland resident, he was preceded in death by his beloved father and mother, Andrew G. Putka and Lillian Putka (nee Koryta), his sister, Jeanne Putka Carrick and niece, Martha Carrick Ryan. He is survived by his niece, Barbara Carrick Dumbaugh of Sarasota, Florida, grandnieces Cpt. Elizabeth Johnstone Dumbaugh of Sarasota, Taylor Ryan of Paris, France and Victoria Jeanne Dumbaugh of Medford, Massachusetts and grandnephew Spencer Ryan of Saipan, the Mariana Islands. Andrew was a graduate of Cathedral Latin School and a lifelong, devoted alumnus. He later attended John Carroll University, the US Naval Academy, and Case Western Reserve University from which he earned a BA in Political Science and Juris Doctor degree. Andrew pursued several distinguished and sometimes colorful jobs in the public sector including service in both the Ohio House and Senate; Board of Directors of Notre Dame College where he had taught as an adjunct professor in early years and later received an honorary degree; Superintendent of the Division of Building and Loan Associations under the Ohio Department of Commerce; President, Chairman of the Board and CEO of the American National Bank in Parma; Deputy County Auditor for Cuyahoga County and Secretary of the Board of Revision; Director of Finance for the City of Cleveland and Director of Port Control and CEO of the Cleveland Airport. In between public appointments, Andrew pursued his law career as a private general practitioner, having been admitted to the Ohio State Bar, U.S. District Court, U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Military Appeals. Andrew was active throughout his life in a number of fraternal, professional and civic organizations including the ABA, Cuyahoga County Bar Association, Knights of Columbus, Pi Kappa Alpha, Delta Theta Phi, First Catholic Slovak Union, International Order of the Alhambra, National Newman Club Federation, Ohio Municipal League, and the International Pax Romana Congress. World War II U. S. Navy veteran. Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, July 21, 11:00 a.m. at St. Christopher Church 20141 Detroit Road Rocky River, Ohio.
